Communication Matters: Elevators & Construction Graphic

Communication Matters: Elevators & Construction

Posted on January 6, 2026January 6, 2026 by Ken

Key Takeaways

• Essential info isn’t being shared clearly.
Elevator notices didn’t explain that all three elevators were out — leaving residents confused and waiting.

• Basic questions go unanswered.
Notices should tell us what’s happening, how long it may last, and what residents should do.

• Construction communication is incomplete.
Second-floor work started with little guidance on safe access for residents who park there.

• Owners deserve better communication — not just “good news.”
Transparent, timely updates about safety and building operations are reasonable expectations.

Elevators

On 1/5/26, the three main elevators (1–3) went down around 3:15 PM. The fire department even had to rescue residents stuck in Elevator #3. The next day 1/6 all three are still down. No explanations! No expectation of a return to normalcy. This is unprecedented in my 30 years at BK1.

Here is the problem:

The notices we received did not clearly say that all three elevators were out of service.

All afternoon, residents stood waiting for elevators that were never going to arrive. We’ve received many messages lately about parties and proxies — but when it comes to basic building operations, the information is vague and incomplete.

Text from Livvie
The information here is different from what was in the email. Thus incomplete. No signs on elevator doors.
Email announcing only 2 of 3 elevators not working, while all 3 were out of service

Clear updates should answer simple questions:

  • Which elevators are down?
    • There is no mention of #4 being out of service.  How long has this been the case?
  • How long has the outage been?
  • What is the estimated repair timeline?

That’s the level of communication we should expect.

UPDATE Tue 1/6 3:50PM: The elevators are now working. Did we receive any information informing the residents? NOT YET!

Livve Notifications
Notice Anything Missing: No notification that the main bank of elevators is operating again

Construction on the 2nd Floor Elevator Lobby

We also learned about construction starting January 19, 2026. The notice was brief and didn’t explain how residents who park on the second floor should access their cars during the work.

Reasonable questions were never addressed:

  • Where do we walk?
  • Are there easier routes for people carrying groceries or luggage?
  • Will access points change throughout the project?

On top of that, residents have noticed areas that appear to have been painted over where there may have been moisture or mold. There has been no mention of testing, remediation, or safety precautions to remediate the mold.   Should we have been wearing masks traversing this elevator lobby?

Second Elevator Lobby
This is how our elevator lobby has appeared for over three months. Note areas with paint are cover black mold substance.

This doesn’t mean there is a hazard — but when communication is vague, it understandably raises concern.

What Owners Deserve

This is our home — and for most of us, one of our biggest investments.

We should expect:

  • Timely, accurate updates about outages and construction
  • Clear instructions about how to navigate the building
  • Transparency about any potential health or safety issues
  • Leadership that prioritizes essential information, not just “good news”

Better communication doesn’t cost money.
It requires organization, attention, and respect for residents.

Are you frustrated by this? Many of us are — and it’s reasonable to speak up and expect better.
